Here we will go over where you can find all of the Black Myth Wukong Character Portraits of which there are 32 in total and whilst all 32 can technically be found in your first playthrough I strongly recommend leaving the character portraits you will find in Mount Mei where you will work towards the secret ending as this will be a lot easier if you wait until new game plus. The other 29 character portraits can be found throughout your first playthrough most of which unlock just by playing through the game.
Character Portraits
I will list off all of the Characters in the order they appear in game which you can access by going: Menu> Journal> Yaoguai Kings in the order they appear at the end of the game as in the journal so this list is as it appears in game once the final boss, The Great Sage’s Broken Shell boss is put down:
Whiteclad Noble
Location: Black Wind Mountain, Bamboo Grove, Marsh of White Mist.
The Whiteclad Noble is a 2 phase boss who you will need to fight to progress through to the Black Wind Cave.
Keeper Of The Black Wind Mountain
Location: Black Wind Mountain.
You will meet the Keeper of Black Wind Mountain throughout the Black Wind Mountain region, he is the old man who teaches you how to use a shrine and gives you the Immobilize Spell among other times you will meet him during the first chapter.
Man-in-Stone
Location: Yellow Wind Ridge, Fright Cliff, Squall Hideout.
The Man-in-Stone is a convoluted portrait to acquire and will be easier once you have defeated the optional Mother of Stones boss in the Fright Cliff which then awards you the Stone Essence. Rest at the Squall Hideout then head right staying on the lower level where you can enter a canyon at the end of which will be the Man-in-Stone who you can speak to. He will absorb the Stone Essence then awaken and insult you so hit him to reveal the Man-in-Stone boss then after the fight rest at a shrine again where the Man-in -Stone then becomes a vendor.
Yellow-Robed Squire
Location: Yellow Wind Ridge.
The Yellow-Robed Squire is an NPC who you can find in the large open area behind the Rockrest Flat shrine by smashing through the gate behind the Spearbone then follow the steps in the Drunken Boar quest where you travel to the Crouching Tiger Temple and feed the Squire a Jade Flower, ensure you have defeated the First Prince of Flowing Sands boss which awards you with the Arkat Gold Piece then go back where you met the Squire and go right to initiate the Yellow-Robed Squire boss fight.
Headless Monk
Location: Yellow Wind Ridge.
The Headless Monk is an NPC you can find throughout Yellow Wind Ridge including at the start, once the King and Second Prince Flowing Sands boss have been defeated, in the Windseal Gate region where you receive the A Pluck of Many Spell and at the end of Yellow Wind Ridge after you defeat the Yellow Wind Sage boss.
Boddhisatva Lingi
Location: Yellow Wind Ridge, Yellow Wind Formation, Windseal Gate.
The Boddhisatva Lingi NPC will form from the Headless Monk at the end of Yellow Wind Ridge during the cutscene after the Yellow Wind Sage boss has been defeated.
Turtle General
Location: The New West, Bitter Lake.
The Turtle General is an NPC who you initially land on after you are done in the first half of The New West. Once you have defeated the Kang-Jin Star boss you can interact with Zhu Bajie to set sail on the back of the Turtle and the final interaction with the Turtle will come in the form of you interacting with the large skeleton at the back of the arena where you can fight the Apramana Bat boss which then causes the Turtle to shed a tear which you can collect unlocking the Turtle Tear Soak.
The Fox
Location: The New West, Valley of Ecstasy, Forest of Felicity.
The Fox portrait will unlock when you have spoken to the corpse to the left of the Forest of Felicity shrine where you then receive the Snow Fox Brush as part of the Bloody Snow Fox quest. Take the Snow Fox Brush through to the New Thunderclap Temple then head forward and left up through the buildings to the room where the Non-Void boss will aggro upon you entering as the Bloody Snow Fox. Once the Non-Void boss is down you can return to where you acquired the Snow Fox Brush, speak to the corpse again who will then find peace and award you the Snow Fox Brush Curios.
Green-Capped Martialist
Location: The New West.
The Green-Capped Martialist can initially be found in the Western side of the North Shore of the Bitter Lake region who will be being attacked by 3 Cyan Bats so put them down then speak with the Martialist. From here, continue through to the Forest of Felicity shrine then go left and head down to the Towers of Karma shrine you can rest at. Equip the Ring of Fire Spell then turn around and go forward to find the Martialist freezing on a rock to your right the use the Ring of Fire spell ensuring you exhaust all of his dialogue. With all of that done you can go to the end of the frozen lakes from the Brook of Bliss shrine and platform down to Watermelon Field where the Green-Capped Martialist boss can be fought and defeated. You will then receive the very powerful Spell Binder Spell as a reward.
The Third Prince
Location: The New West, Pagoda Realm, Lower Pagoda.
The Third Prince is an NPC who you can find in a cell to the left of the Lower Pagoda shrine who initially will be locked behind a purple seal which you can remove by defeating the Captain Lotus-Vision boss. Upon speaking with the Third Prince you will be tasked with finding 4 Spirits who are:
- Captain Lotus-Vision, Pagoda Realm, Upper Pagoda.
- Captain Wise-Voice. Ensure you acquire the Auspicious Lantern Curios before you defeat Captain Wise-Voice.
- Captain Void-Illusion, Valley of Ecstasy, Longevity Road. Go to the right of the Longevity Road shrine and absorb the Spirit from the giant wooden corpse.
- Captain Kalpa-Wave, Valley of Ecstasy, Longevity Road.
You can then return to the Third Prince who will then award you the Chubai Spearhead you can use amongst other materials to craft the Chu-Bai Spear at a shrine.
The Keeper Of The New West
Location: The New West, Snowhill Path. Frost-Clad Path.
You will find the Keeper of the New West once you are at the end of the Frost-Clad Path region. He will turn you into a Bat where you then fly down to the Mirrormere region.
Zhu Bajie
Location: The New West, Bitter Lake, Turtle Island.
Zhu Bajie plays a key role in the game and even becomes a boss you can fight on 2 different occasions. You will initially meet Zhu Bajie directly after the Kang-Jin Star boss fight then again multiple times throughout the game right up until the penultimate boss in the game.
Venom Daoist
Location: The Webbed Ridge.
The Venom Daoist is a boss who you will need to fight in 2 different locations in the Webbed Ridge, the first will be in the Pool of Shattered Jade biome which is accessible by going forward from the Upper Hollow shrine then dropping down to your left when you get to the first set of planks embedded into the floor then follow the linear path up pass the Scorpion Prince, rest at the Pool of Shattered Jade shrine then enter the back room to your right. Ensure you smash the arms from the Daoist’s back during the boss fight so you can acquire the easily missed Venomous Armguards arm armour.
The second time you can fight the Venom Daoist will be in the Temple of Yellow Flowers, Court of Illumination biome by turning around from the shrine, running directly forward up the stairs then taking a left down the slope. Once the Venom Daoist boss has been defeated in both locations you will also unlock the way to Purple Cloud Mountain which serves as the secret area for The Webbed Ridge.
Crane Immortal
Location: The Webbed Ridge, Temple of Yellow Flowers, Court of Illumination.
The Crane Immortal is an NPC who you can find in the area behind the Court of Illumination shrine and one who will only appear once the Purple Talisman quest has been completed. Find the 3 purple talismans in the Verdure Bridge, Cliff of Oblivion and Relief of Fallen Loong biomes then go through to the back areas and remove the fourth and final purple talisman where the Celestial Inspector will ambush you. Knock some health from the boss where the fight will abruptly end with the Crane Immortal giving you a speech.
Hong Yi
Location: The Webbed Ridge, Purple Cloud Mountain.
Hong Yi is a large female Snake NPC who you can speak to before crossing the first bridge in Purple Cloud Mountain which serves as the secret area of The Webbed Ridge and is accessible by defeating the Venom Daoist boss and the Venom Daoist (second encounter) boss which then causes a painting to form on the back of the cavern wall leading you through to Purple Cloud Mountain. Speak with Hong Yi exhausting her dialogue then defeat the optional Daoist Mi boss in Petalfall Hamlet before defeating the Scorpionlord (not needed for Hong Yi, but you need to defeat the Scorpionlord before the Duskveil) then defeat the Duskveil where Hong Yi will make her final appearance.
Keeper Of The Flaming Mountains
Location: Flaming Mountains.
The Keeper of the Flaming Mountains will be a boss who you need to fight in the Emerald Hall region, you will then see a cutscene in the Bishui Caves which serves as the secret area of the Flaming Mountains and is accessible by completing the Rusty Carts quest after you have defeated the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast boss.
Ma Tianba
Location: Throughout the game.
Ma Tianba is the muscular Horse NPC who you can speak with in 5 different locations throughout the game as you learn more about his story, background and his plan to bring down evil. You need to ensure you speak with Ma Tianba before completing each of the first 5 chapters in the game otherwise he will move on and you will be locked out of speaking with him and ultimately be unable to attain the rewards. The 5 locations you can find Ma Tianba in are:
- Black Wind Mountain, Bamboo Grove, Back Hills.
- Yellow Wind Ridge, Sandgate Village, Village Entrance.
- The New West, New Thunderclap Temple, Temple Entrance.
- The Webbed Ridge, Webbed Hollow, Bonevault / Middle Hollow.
- Flaming Mountains, Furnace Valley, Valley Entrance.
Once you have spoken to Ma Tianba in all 5 locations you will receive the Dark Thunder Transformation as well as unlock Urge Unfulfilled.
Pale-Axe Stalwart
Location: Flaming Mountains, Woods of Ember, Ashen Pass I.
The Pale-Axe Stalwart is initially a boss who you need to take down in the Ashen Pass I region, you can then speak with him after defeating the Brown-Iron Cart boss then again in the location after defeating the Crimson-Silver Cart. Finally, go to the Cooling Slope region accessible by going back down the hill from the Furnace Valley Crater shrine then taking a left now the flames have been extinguished, rest then go into the open area providing you have been following along with the Rusty Carts quest you will find the Pale-Axe Stalwart being chewed on by the Rusty-Gold Cart boss then finally, you can speak with the Pale-Axe Stalwart after defeating the Rusty-Gold Cart boss where he will then pass away unlocking the entrance to the Bishui Caves area in the process.
Pingping
Location: Flaming Mountains, Woods of Ember, Height of Ember.
PingPing is a bit of a strange NPC as initially it will be hanging upside down as a trapped Fox who is freed after the Quick as Fire, Fast as Wind boss fight then transform into a Young Lady before ultimately transforming into the Red Boy boss.
Rakshasi
Location: Flaming Mountains, Field of Fire, Furnace Valley Crater.
Rakshasi is an NPC who is the wife of the Bull King, you will see Rakshasi initially speaking with the Keeper of Flaming Mountains, again at the back of the Bishui Caves and finally you will see her at the end of Chapter 5 once the Yaksha King boss has been defeated.
Bull King
Location: Flaming Mountains, Field of Fire, Furnace Valley Crater.
The Bull King serves as Lord of the Flaming Mountains, there are many references made to and about him through the Flaming Mountains, you will get a definitive cutscene at the end of Chapter 5.
Supreme Celestial Inspector
Location: The Webbed Ridge, Temple of Yellow Flowers, Court of Illumination or Mount Huaguo, Foothills, Verdant Path.
The Supreme Inspector can initially be found in the Court of Illumination at the end of the purple talisman quest and again as the first boss you will face in Mount Huaguo.
Mandrill Chief
Location: Throughout the game.
The Mandrill Chief is the NPC who has an affinity for Skandha’s and can be found in the following 5 sections of the game:
- Black Wind Mountain where you can acquire the Skandha of Form.
- Yellow Wind Ridge where you can acquire the Skandha of Feeling.
- The New West where you can acquire the Skandha of Thought.
- The Webbed Ridge where you can acquire the Skandha of Choice.
- Mount Huaguo where you can fight the Giant Shigandang boss at the end of the ravine after which you will be able to climb the Giant Shigandang and acquire the Skandha of Consciousness.
With all 5 Skandha’s acquired you can then go to Xu Dog and have him make you the Five Skandha’s Pill which should then unlock Medicine Meal.
Yin Tiger
Location: Ruyi Scroll, Zodiac Village.
Yin Tiger is a vendor you can find in the Zodiac Village which is accessible once you have completed the Chen Loong quest. Go through to the back area then if you are feeling proficient at Black Myth Wukong you can choose “Challenge” which then spawns in the Yin Tiger boss, a very challenging opponent when you first meet him and one who will afford you the Ebon Flow Transformation as well as allow you to equip a third Curios once he’s defeated.
Chen Loong
Location: The New West, Bitter Lake, North Shore of the Bitter Lake.
You can find the Chen Loong boss over to the West of the North Shore of the Bitter Lake region, he will be in the waves and will aggro as you approach. After his defeat he will ask you to resurrect him so go to Xu Dog in the Cellar of Yellow Wind Ridge (open the floor in the Tiger Vanguard (King) boss arena using the Sternness of Stone (acquired from the Stone Vanguard boss) and talk to him where he will give you the resurrection pill for Chen Loong. Once you have returned the Pill to Chen Loong he will then grant you the Ruyi Scroll granting you access to the Zodiac Village. Chen Loong can then be spoken to and is an integral part of the Seeds to Sow trophy as well as helping you acquire the Elder Armourworm Spirit.
Shen Monkey
Location: Black Wind Mountain, Bamboo Grove, Marsh of White Mist.
You will initially come across Shen Monkey in the Marsh of White Mist and you will need to take down the Serpent to rescue him. You will then meet Shen Monkey again in the Zodiac Village which is accessible by completing the Chen Loong quest and will need to interact with him several more times throughout the game.
Xu Dog
Location: Yellow Wind Ridge.
Xu Dog is an important NPC and one who you can initially find in the cavern to the left of the Village Entrance shrine. Defeat the Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw boss in the quarry at the end of the tunnel then return to Xu Dog with the Evil Repelling Medicament Formula. Xu Dog can then be found in the Cellar which is accessed by opening the door in the blood pool after defeating the Tiger Vanguard (King) boss by using the Sternness of Stone you receive after defeating the Stone Vanguard boss. You can then find Xu Dog throughout the game at the Zodiac Village which is a secret region you can enter by completing the Chen Loong quest.
The Old Monkey
Location: Start of the game.
The Old Monkey is an NPC who will introduce himself at the start of the game after the Sun Wukong vs Erlang fight in what serves as the Prologue. You will unlock the Portrait once you gain control of the Destined One (your character).
Maitreya
Location: The New West.
Maitreya is the young Buddha who you will find throughout the New West, when you see Maitreya in his yellow robes that is the Yellowbrow boss assuming the role of the young one where as when he is in his blue attire that will be Maitreya. You won’t receive the Maitreya Portrait until you have achieved the secret ending which I recommend doing in New Game Plus.
Erlang The Sacred Divinity
Location: The New West, Mount Mei.
Erlang the Scared Divinity is the first enemy you will fight in the game as Sun Wukong, there won’t be any other references to Erlang until you work through the secret ending in Mount Mei which I recommend doing on New Game Plus.
The Great Sage's Broken Shell
Location: Mount Huaguo, Birthstone, Heart of Birthstone.
The Great Sage’s Broken Shell is the final boss in the base game and is a seriously challenging fight which you can make simpler by equipping the Serpentscale Battlerobe chest armour especially if you upgrade it as well as the Waterward Orb Curios.
Yuan Soucheng
Location: Throughout the game.
Yuan Soucheng appears a good number of times in Black Myth Wukong and plays a part in a good number of story elements both optional and mandatory with you needing to speak with him in the following 5 locations in the base game:
- Black Wind Mountain, Bamboo Grove, Snake Trail.
- Yellow Wind Ridge, Yellow Wind Formation, Windseal Gate.
- The New West, Snowhill Path, Frost-Clad Path.
- The Webbed Ridge, Temple of Yellow Flowers, Temple Entrance.
- Flaming Mountains, Furnace Valley, Rakshasa Palace.
Finding Yuan Soucheng in the aforementioned areas then interacting with the flame in the room after upgrade the Gourd to its highest level will unlock Always Accompanied. You can also find Yuan Soucheng after the Yellow Loong boss fight which also unlocks The Sire and Sons. Finally, you will unlock the Yuan Soucheng Portrait after achieving the Secret Ending.
