The game

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition is a ramped up version of the Devil May Cry 5 game which released in April 2019 and offers new game modes and a new playable character, Vergil who is Dante’s twin brother and an incredibly powerful Demon slayer who wields the mythical Yamato katana.

The game itself for those who haven’t played DMC 5 sees you go through a good number of missions defeating demon’s and taking down some spectacular bosses as you try and stop the Demon king, Urizen from destroying the world as you know it.

The gameplay is very fast paced and is simply one of the very best hack and slash games that has ever come to pass.

The majority of times you are going to be outnumbered against seemingly unsurmountable odds but with the right combination of moves and skill, you will be able to carve your way through each and every mission.

The combat is deliberate and varied, you have either melee or firearms as your main weapons as you try to be as stylish as possible when taking down the hordes.

Out of the 4 playable characters you have everything from spiritual demons to 2 halves of a motorcycle at your disposal and nearly everything in between.

The combat is by far one of the the very best I have ever come to know on any console, on PS5 or XSX/S though, the game looks absolutely stunning.

You have a range of performance and visual options to go through including dedicated 60fps and Ray Tracing which will be disabled in Legendary Dark Knight mode as there is no way even the highest spec GPU could cope with the sheer numbers of Demon’s on screen as well as Ray Trace everything perfectly.

Out of the 4 players in the Special Edition of DMC 5, Vergil is by far the most powerful, however, don’t write off Nero, V and Dante as they all have their own merits and playstyles so make sure you give each one a good chance as some of the things they can do in combat needs to be seen to be believed.

The good

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition looks absolutely beautiful even when things get manic on screen for which Capcom are to be commended for in pulling this off.

I never noticed a drop in the FPS even when playing through the Bloody Palace, an arena style area which sees you take down wave after wave of enemies.

The combat as well is second to none of a game in this genre and will take a lot of time, effort and skill to master, but once you have mastered it you’ll be ready to take on the hardest difficulties where the real challenge in DMC 5 lies.

There are many different difficulties in the game, ranging from an easy mode where you can take a lot of damage before dying or Hell and Hell mode which sees the enemies have roughly 400% health and you die in 1 hit which is as brutal as it sounds.

The brutality of the harder difficulties will force you to master the game’s controls in order to get through the first mission, let alone the latter ones.

The not so good

Really not much, the original Devil May Cry 5 which launched back in April 2019 was a very well polished game, in the Special Edition, Capcom have raised the bar and managed to keep it up throughout.

If you decide to play as the 3 main characters, Nero, Dante and V, the game can be somewhat jarring as you will be jumping between characters through the story which, whilst not the worst thing, does force you to learn 3 different playstyles pretty much on the fly, whereas if you play as Vergil, he gets the entire game to himself.

I think Capcom could have introduced play in the Special Edition for the 3 main guys in this way as well, rather than having specific missions, it would have been nice to play through the entire game as Dante, as Nero or as V exclusively.

But this is a minor gripe and overall doesn’t affect the story.

Audio

The sound is really well done in Devil May Cry 5 and really helps bring the immersion of the game to life with the music combined with the celebratory cheer of Dante finishing a combo or Nero finding a new Devil Breaker.

The hits in combat are purposeful and sound as you’d imagine a Devil hunter’s weapons made of 2 halves of a motorcycle or a demonic set of gloves and boots would sound.

The voice acting is good and does a very good job of conveying feelings and emotions throughout the 3 protagonists and various NPCs you play as or encounter in DMC 5.

Online

Devil May Cry 5 features a very strange kind of “multiplayer” where in certain missions you can see another player fighting in the portion of the level they would be going through, for example in several missions.

You can play as either Nero or V with each character taking their own route through the mission, if playing as V, you could see a Nero and vice versa but there’s no sort of co-op where you could both play through a mission together.

Trophies

Definitely one of the harder games out there if you’re looking at getting the platinum as you need to complete the game on the hardest difficulty modes including the new Legendary Dark Knight mode which throws near enough as many enemies at you as the consoles can handle.

There are a good amount of miscellaneous trophies to collect throughout which offers good variation showing you near enough everything that Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition has to offer.

Overall

Devil May Cry 5 was a stunning game which has been made so much better with the inclusion of Vergil as a playable character.

The new modes the Special Edition brings and the ability the game has to hold it’s own when there are literal armies of Demon’s on the screen and not seem to drop a frame making this a true must play on PS5.

I award Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition a very well deserved 9.5 out of 10.

Final Score: 9.5

9.5/10

That’s our Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition Review I hope it helps you make a decision on whether or not the game is worth your time and money.
