Maneater Review

Here is our Maneater Review giving you a subjective, unbiased review helping you make a more educated decision on whether or not the game is for you.

The game

You will be playing through this underwater, open world action survival game as a pup bull shark who starts off by getting ripped out of its pregnant bull shark mother by Scaly Pete, a shark hunter who pulls no punches, Scaly Pete is the main antagonist in Maneater and the your main motivation for progressing through the game.

As you progress through you will be taking on all manner of creatures in the deep starting off getting beaten and battered by Alligators in the swamp progressing through to become an absolute beast of the seas.

As you progress through the game you will unlock different abilities and powers that you can use depending on what sort of targets you want to go after.

If you want to take down fishing boats, you can turn into a solid bone shark that can rip through boats in seconds or do you want to take down every enemy that swims in your sea? If so, you can change into a bio-electric nightmare for anything that swims in the ocean and much more besides.

You are free to explore the maps at your leisure after the prologue, but be careful out there, under levelled sharks won’t last long in the depths of the oceans against the biggest and baddest so you best be eating everything on your way through the areas to make sure you’re powerful enough to take them on when you get there.

That in lies the beauty of Maneater, if you go against an enemy that’s to tough, get out there and take down everything in your path, hoover up schools of Mackeral, take down waves of parrot fish or jump out the water onto a beach and eat the sunbathing humans.

The good

Maneater is at its best when you’re taking down multiple targets on the surface then diving down deep to replenish your health eating whatever you can find then going back to finish off your foes.

You will also be levelling up, getting bigger and bigger going from a pup shark into a fantastically mutated megalodon capable of defeating the strongest enemies the game has to offer.

Play about with the different abilities / upgrades to find the perfect combination for your playstyle, you really have the freedom to play and defeat your enemies any way you choose to really.

The not so good

One of my main criticisms of Maneater is the repetitive nature of the game as you move from area to area, the game has a fair bit of variety but after the fourth or fifth time of go here, eat these fish or go here, eat these humans it can lose it’s appeal.

Whilst you do have a good amount of abilities / upgrades to help you mix things up, ultimately it’s very much the same as you go through the game.

Audio

Maneater sounds eerily peaceful when you’re going through the caves or patrolling the ocean floor looking for your next victim then when you do go for a target the game’s music kicks up the tempo and you can feel the rush of the hunt and the takedown.

There is a commentator that narrates the various events throughout Port Clovis offering you various shark based facts and relaying the current events going on such as having bounty hunters tracking you or if an important target is nearby.

Online

Maneater is a completely offline game and is single player only meaning you can do as you please when you please without having to worry about any other players coming along to try and ruin your day.

Trophies

You’re well covered here with a good variation of trophies you can earn throughout Maneater including a good amount of collectibles with Nutrient Caches which will help you level up faster, Landmarks which will unlock special upgrades as well as Licence Plates because what’s a good shark game without a licence plate to chew on.

In addition to the collectibles, you will need to work your way through each and every area clearing it out completely then take down a series of apex predators to finish things up.

Overall

Maneater is a unique game which is definitely an enjoyable experience as you thrash around the deep and not so deep areas of Port Clovis where many hours of fun and enjoyment can be had, unfortunately though, Maneater does fall short on replayability and variation as you make your way through.

That said for a £34.99 game where you can tear through the ocean biting, tailwhipping and becoming the biggest badass in the ocean the game is definitely a fun time.

So with all that taken into consideration, I’ll give Maneater a well earned 7 out of 10, the developers have definitely set the foundations for a very good game series here and I look forward to more entries in the hope this becomes a series.

Final Score: 7

7/10

That’s our Maneater Review I hope it helps you decide on whether or not the game is worth your time and money.
