Necromunda Hired Gun Review

Here is our Necromunda Hired Gun Review giving you a subjective, unbiased review helping you make a more educated decision on whether or not the game is for you.

The game

In Necromunda Hired Gun you play as a Bounty Hunter who works his / her way through the campaign to enact revenge as brutally as you can.

The main game is broke up into 13 chapters that see you take on all many of enemy including soldiers, shielded mechs, brutes, dogs the occasion aliens and a good number of bosses.

You get a wide variety of weaponry to help you through your killing spree including miniguns, shotguns, plasma guns, grenade launchers and more as well as augmented cybernetic implants to allow you to really crank up the punishment you can dish out.

In addition to the main campaign there are a good number of secondary missions to complete that earn you extra cash allowing you to buy more upgrades becoming more powerful as you go.

Necromunda Hired gun is a thrash metal fps that brings feelings of Doom as you blast your way through the Underhive of Warhammer 40ks’ Universe.

The good

Necromunda Hired Gun is spectacular at doing what it does well, giving you overpowered weapons and sending in to clear a zone or level of enemies turning them into pulp or sending your cyber-enhanced Mastiff off to remove an awkward enemies’ head.

The traversal system in Necromunda is really good, you can double jump, air-dash, wall-run, make good use of a grappling hook to pull you out of a situation or rip an enemies’ shield out of their hands leaving them open to swallow your lead as you turn them into a colander.

The weapons feel well weighted and do a really good job of making you feel like a badass and the Mastiff which can be upgraded to become a nightmare inducing blend of mutt and machine that does an amazing job of clearing a room.

Visually the game looks good, you can feel the industrious decline of the world you’re fighting through which represents the Warhammer 40k Universe really well, especially in the Underhive, you’ll find no space marines and the only orcish style enemies are the Brutes that try and rip you apart but overall it’s a very good representation of the Underbelly where the various factions fight for control.

The not so good

This brings us to the issues in Necromunda Hired Gun, of which there are a few, some serious, some not to bad, I will say that at a £34.99 price point, I am more forgiving on a game’s issues as opposed to a full priced 70 quid game, however, at launch, there are a few things that should have been sorted before launch.

Chief amongst which, I was playing the PS5 version and had 24 game crashes whilst playing through the campaign, 6 of which happened just as I killed the penultimate boss in the game which incidentally is the hardest fight throughout the campaign.

As you go through the game you can perform takedowns when you’re close to an un-shielded enemy which gives an animation of you killing an enemy with either throwing knives, decapitation, a gun execution and so on.

More than a few times the animation would play but send me the other side of the map or put me through a wall, sometimes it would place me back where I started, other times I would be stuck and need to reload my last save.

This is definitely a “make sure your save is backed up at every opportunity type of game”.

I will also say I have spoken directly with Streum On Studio, the developer’s behind the game and they have said they are aware of the issues and are working on a patch to fix the majority of the issues.

They have asked if we can all report the issues with a short message in the crash screen to let them know what they need to focus on more which is really good to see a positive attitude towards fixing a game, especially in this day and age.

Audio

They’ve done a good job here, especially with the weapons, they have a good bang when firing and a technical sounding reload with clicks and cocks sounding as they do in real life, the augmetic abilities sound pretty good with the enemies being turned into mush with either an energy blast or an old fashioned chest impaling.

Where the game really comes alive though is when their are enemies nearby and the game goes into overdrive mode with an adrenaline inducing soundtrack that just makes you want to get your biggest gun and go on a rampage.

The voice acting is OK but to be honest, it’s there because it has to be and isn’t overly long allowing you to get back to what the game’s about. Getting a Mastiff, a Death Bringer and going on the hunt.

Online

Necromunda Hired Gun is an offline, solo game.

Trophies

There is a good variety of trophies you can unlock in Necromunda Hired Gun including story progression through to the end of the game which is worth playing.

Specific kill trophies, weapon based trophies and a really good variety of things to do taking you through the game.

I had no issues with trophies not unlocking which seems to be on the rare side these days and I commend the developer’s for ensuring any issues were ironed out before launch here.

Overall

If the issues like soft crashes and the like weren’t there in the game, this would easily be a 9/10 for the type of game it is. We don’t have a lot of thrash-metal fps games out there and this is a fantastic brutal, blood-fest of a game.

It’s just such a shame it launched in an un-polished state, even with the patch coming out, I have to review the game in its launch state and it could have done with another month in the oven before release for me.

That said, it is a good time as you go through, the enemies are fairly well balanced and have a decent sense of approach as they try and take you down.

Overall I’ll give Necromunda Hired Gun an 8/10 as despite the issues, it’s just a good time game that allows you to lose yourself for a few hours in a session of thrash metal shotgun explosiveness and I really enjoyed it.

Final Score: 8

8/10
