The game

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit originally released on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC back in November 2010, EA and Criterion Games have since brought this Remaster with new visuals, all 5 DLC packs in one neat package to current gen.

Hot Pursuit was a fairly solid game back in the day and you get much of the same here including a large selection of vehicles which can accommodate different driving styles, whether you’re a drifter, a power-slider or drive with full on aggression, you can find your niche here and exploit it to your advantage whilst racing through Seacrest County.

Where the game really comes alive though is in the Hot Pursuit modes where you play as either a Cop or a Racer trying to make your way up the ranks as you either fight for first place or hunt down the racers trying to evade you.

Given the selection of weapons you have available, everything from spike strips to roadblocks, EMP strikes to helicopters ramming racers off the road you will be well catered for throughout the game depending on what it is you’re looking for.

You do have a good amount of variety throughout, although that can feel a bit samey after a while given the, “get there as fast as you can” requirements for a lot of events.

That said, the game series is called Need For Speed so it fits in well.

The good

The selection of vehicles here is nice to see, even though most of them will only be available for players who invest a lot of time and effort either as a Racer or as a Cop in order to earn the xp to work your way through and up the ranks.

Vehicle combat is nice to see in a game of this style where you can utilise a nice variety of weapons and tactics to bring down the Racers or avoid the Cops trying to bust you.

Also, I think it’s well worth mentioning this Remaster isn’t being marketed as a full price AAA game, it’s available for £34.99 at launch which, given the fact all 5 DLC packs are included is very reasonable for what we get here.

The not so good

Visually, the game is lacking any real polish, there isn’t really an open world to drive through that feels lived in, every so often you will pass another car on the road which is usually placed directly on the perfect racing line which just feels like it’s intentionally there to mess up your time or place in the race.

The game almost feels obnoxious with the vehicle placement at times as you usually hit them on a blind corner with no chance of getting out of the way.

The game also doesn’t really feel like a Remaster, yes, it’s a lot better looking than the 2010 version, it just feels like they could have done a lot more with the game given the success and gameplay that was achieved in the 2015 Need For Speed as well as Need For Speed Heat.

Hot Pursuit just left me wanting more oomph really which I felt slightly let down by.

Then again, the game isn’t full price, at £34.99, I think that’s fair for what we have got here.

Audio

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit does a good job audio wise with the cars revving nice and powerfully, you get a good feel for the grip capabilities of the tyres when you can hear the squeal, it all helps to add to a more immersive experience.

The weapons have a good sound effects as well, you can hear the ding of an EMP hitting a car or the pop of the tyres when they are relieved of their air by a spike strip.

The Police radio chatter can be a bit dull and leaves a fair bit to be desired with a few copy and paste audio clips used throughout the game.

That said, overall they have done a decent job in bringing the sounds you’d expect to hear in an arcade racer.

Online

Online modes haven’t been forgotten about and if you have a friend online or even in random lobbies there is a great deal of fun to be had here as you can play as either a Racer or a Cop then put each others skills to the test.

Combine that with live updates on when you beat a friends’ time around a certain event it gives you a good amount of drive to push on and try and beat them or realise that the harder events in the game are possible when you see someone has managed it.

Trophies

There are a good amount of trophies to earn in Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered, that will see you need to visit nearly every section in the game.

The majority of them will require you to grind through to rank 20 as a Cop or wanted level 20 as a Racer which will take a good number of hours, along the way you should be able to get all of the other trophies, including several online ones you will need to earn.

There are also trophies you can earn throughout the 5 DLC packs in the game giving you 67 trophies including the platinum in total.

All in all you will have a decent challenge in trying to 100% the game on whichever platform you decide to play on.

Overall

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered is a solid game, all be it lacking in the visual department, there is a good amount of off and online activities to enjoy and play through.

The game is at its best when you’re either taking down Racers or avoiding the Cops trying to get first place which fans of the arcade racing genre will feel at home with.

Overall, I give Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered a solid 8/10.

Final Score: 8

8/10

That’s our Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered Review I hope it helps you decide whether or not the game is worth your time and money.
