The game
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is a third person shooter platformer interdimensional adventure that really shows the potential of what games on the PlayStation 5 can look like. The start of the game sees Ratchet separated from his bff, Clank as Nefarious steals the Dimensionator, a device Clank made to help Ratchet find any other Lombax’s that might be out there which seamlessly introduces a new playable character to the Ratchet and Clank series in Rivet, a female Lombax who’s just as, if not more capable of handling herself as Ratchet.
Thus sending you into a world of adventure that takes place across 9 planets set throughout the dimensions with everything from a bustling metropolis to a Dinosaur filled swampland, Pirate ship battles to a space planet you will be constantly flipping between dimensions on as you navigate through a world that has been destroyed in one dimension and thriving with life in another dimension.
The good
The game is stunningly beautiful – all of the time, some games have cutscenes that look brilliant and gameplay that looks a bit ropey or vice versa, Rift Apart, however, looks incredible whether you’re taking down hordes of Nefarious robots or soaring through the skies on Trudi, a ridable Dragon creature who can shoot fireballs like an F-16 machine gun, it never misses a beat and depending on the various performance settings you choose, either 30 fps with Ray Tracing or 60 fps with part time graphic boost the game just hits every visual note you could hope for.
The weapons as well deserve a special mention as they are as unique as any game ranging from a blast pistol that can fire hundreds of bullets across an area to a warmonger that blows up anything in your path or a sniper rifle that slows time to a Doom Glove which summons a deadly pack to take down those who dare stand in your way. The story, whilst not as long as it perhaps could be does a very good job of conveying Ratchet’s loneliness and his search for any sign of his species existence then the pursuit of Nefarious as both Ratchet and Rivet as you switch dimensions to save every world out there.
The combat is slick and purposeful, you feel a need to take down every enemy that stands in your way by double jump dodging out of a lasers path fired by a juggernaut or sprinting away from a dinosaurs charge attack to taking on swarms of hungry alien creatures. Using the DualSense controllers adaptive triggers and advanced rumble features you feel more immersed in the combat as you battle your way across the planets.
The not so good
Honestly, there’s not much I didn’t like about the game, it would of been nicer to have a longer story, however, it does what it needs to. The main issue I have with the game is the price point really, £70 puts new releases out of a lot of peoples reach, it used to be £50 for a new game, then after going out and spending £450 on a new console (if you can even find one at that price) you’re then forced to pay a premium to play the latest releases which smells like a rip of as companies who spend 100s of millions developing games recuperate the entire cost in the first month or so.
I don’t think Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is worth £70, then again, I don’t think any game is worth that outlay unless you get the deluxe edition / season pass / guaranteed DLC included. For some reason, the developers decided to make the new Lombax, Rivet, such a badass that it makes Ratchet look a bit weak and pathetic. There’s a scene later in the game where Rivet gets thrown out of a window and does a cool flip to save herself, Ratchet gets thrown through the same window and falls to the floor like a bag of sand. Given everything fans of the series have guided Ratchet through since 2002 when the first Ratchet and Clank came out, I think they did the Lombax a dis-service for the most part when compared with Rivet.
Audio
Rift Apart sounds amazing, especially if you have the DualSense controller speaker turned on which helps a great deal in assisting the main game audio with clicks, bangs, reload sounds, damage sound effects and plenty more besides. The voice actors have done an amazing job with Ratchet being played by James Arnold Taylor who always brings his A game to a role, Rivet sounds genuinely as you’d expect a female Lombax who’s going through the pain of losing her arm and the joy of finding out she’s not the only Lombax left alive and is played by the highly talented Jennifer Hale who has also voiced characters in the Mass Effect, Bioshock and Metal gear series.
The combat sounds really well done, just what we’ve come to expect from the Ratchet and Clank series with the weapons, as they usually do, stealing the show. The various world have their own soundtrack with Sargasso, a Dinosaur filled swampland having distant roars and environment noises that add to the immersion or Ardolis, a Pirate ruled planet with water sloshing against the shore.

Overall
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is a fantastic game and a brilliant entry to help the PlayStation 5 show the possibilities of its power. The game very rarely misses a beat, has amazing graphics, a memorable story, fantastic combat and interdimensional warfare as you take down Nefarious in every form he takes switching between Ratchet and Rivet seamlessly, if this is a sign of things to come on PlayStation 5, I’m all in!. I award Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart a very well deserved 9/10 and it’s a Must Play game.
Final Score: 9
